Air Conditioning

Points to Consider Before Purchase

There are several factors to consider before selecting the air conditioning system that is right for you.

Which specific areas require cooling?

Are there specific periods of the day or night that require cooling?

On average, how many people would occupy the area to be cooled?

Is the area exposed to direct sunlight?

Does the area to be cooled have lots of windows/glass?

What is the level of insulation/weatherproofing?

Are there any environmental factors to consider such as heavy dust or moisture?

Does the area to be cooled house any appliances or electronic equipment that may produce heat?

Will existing electrical circuits support the load requirements of air conditioning?

System Options

Utilizing central air-conditioning requires a system of ducts. In most cases the existing ductwork for central heating systems can also be utilized for air-conditioning. Required equipment is simply added on to the existing furnace. If the structure does not have ducting, it may be impractical and cost prohibitive to have this type of system installed. In these cases, a ductless split system, water-cooled system, or window/ wall-mounted room unit may be more practical.

With air conditioning, sizing is critical for comfort and performance. It is very important to remember that room air-conditioning units (otherwise known as "window shakers") are really designed to cool just one room. These units range in size from 5000btu up to 20,000btu and are relatively easy to install. Central air conditioning units (furnace add-ons) vary in size from roughly 18,000btu up to 60,000btu.
